A Very Beer-y Brunch

Hometown heroes, Spiteful Brewing, are stopping by for brunch this Saturday. And they’re too polite to arrive empty handed. We’re tapping their Absinthe Barrel-Aged Klutzy Buffoon Saison with Cherries. It’s the perfect brunch companion at 5.8%! Plus, the cherry aspect put this brew firmly in the fruit juice category of a balanced breakfast.

You’re an educated drinker, so your first question is: Yes, but in which absinthe barrel did they age this delightful concoction? Spiteful Brewing is interested in only the finest, so they sourced barrels from Letherbee Distillers, a supremely cool Chicago spirits company that’s always had a home behind our bar and in many of our cocktails.

We’re mixing up a special Letherbee cocktail, featuring two of their spirits in honor of this momentous partnership: Letherbee Gin, Cherry Heering, Carpano Bianco Vermouth, Angostura Bitters, Letherbee Aged Absinthe.

With a brunch party like this, there’s no such thing as one and done. So, we’re whipping up an extra special brunch special to prolong your drinking experience: Chicken Bouillabaisse, with PEI Mussels, Littleneck Clams, Grilled Baguette, Housemade Rouille.

We start beer brunching at noon on Saturday, December 6th!

Spreading Holiday Cheer

Do you like smiling? Is smiling your favorite? We’ve got a great reason for you to smile during the holiday season: giving help to those who need it.

We’re collecting unopened, non-perishable food items and new, unopened and unwrapped toys for children 14 and under, in collaboration with the Chicago Police Department’s 14th District.

You can drop off donated items right here at Scofflaw. In fact, we lovingly — and expertly — wrapped a shiny donation box to make things a bit more festive. We’ll only be collecting items until December 19th, so don’t wait to donate!

New Year's Eve at Scofflaw

We’re close to the finish line and it’s almost 2015 — a year we’ve been waiting for ever since Back to the Future II: we were promised hoverboards!

As always, we’re here to help you ring in the New Year with a classy, sparkly, and cocktail-fueled party! Your ticket purchase secures your spot and provides all of your party needs:

  • Hors d'oeuvres!
  • Open bar!*
  • DJ for special end-of-year dance moves!
  • Champagne toast at midnight!

Chicago has learned the hard way that it’s no fun to spend the night hailing cabs that never come in order to chase the party. Don't spend the last hours of 2014 outside in the cold. Instead, we invite you to cozy up with us and our two roaring fireplaces for the whole night. Space is limited, so score your tickets now!

Brunch vs. Sobriety

It’s a happy day when we get to marry two of our happiest pastimes: drinking gin and drinking beer. And it’s hive fives all around because this Saturday we’re hosting our buds from Off Color Brewing as they debut Eille, a limited brew inspired by the Prohibition-era, gin based Bees Knees cocktail.

We’ll be pouring the honey saison — made with gin spices and lemon — and the OG cocktail that inspired it. Stay tuned for a brunch special from Chef Mickey, to be served alongside our real honey of a brunch menu.

Halloween at Scofflaw + Slippery Slope!

We’re officially giving up the ghost of Bonny’s at Scofflaw, as our annual Bonny’s Revival Halloween Party moves to Slippery Slope, where those late-night dance parties live on in all their red lit glory. It’s Friday as usual, with Slippery Slope’s regular hours and menu with Friday resident DJs (and long-time Bonny’s party throwers), Superfriends!

But Scofflaw’s got a new party: It’s a Toga Party (think Animal House), and we invite you to consider this an opportunity to show the world your finest bedsheets. Or, wear your Belushi-style “College” sweatshirt, Sexy Little Ceasar, or whatever other brilliance you have up your sleeve. Costumes encouraged because they’re fun and you’re fun but not required.

What is required? Well you should be prepared to drink Jungle Juice and keg beer (settle down, it’s just draft beer) out of those classic Red Solo Cups and chant ‘Toga, Toga, Toga!’ every hour on the hour.

Which paves the way for a massive dance party, via DJ Carlos Mercado. He’ll play the dopest 70’s dance music around, spiced with killer soundtrack anthems all night!

*please note that we’re opening a little later on this evening, and that our regular food and cocktail menus will not be served.

Fan Fiction: Fern Bar Edition

Our own Doug Phillips was born too late. He’s a man obsessed with the 70s, and so it wasn’t much of a surprise when he proposed a Fern Bar edition to continue our Fan Fiction series. And we’re into it, because calcium deficiencies are a silent killer and many of the Fern Bar era cocktails are basically tall glasses of milk.

Fern Bars are an important stop on American Bar History timeline. In 1970 Norman Hobday opened Henry Africa’s in San Francisco, it was a distinct departure from the dark taverns that people typically frequented. The lighting was brighter, think Tiffany lamps and Grandma’s parlor decor, along with a fair amount of the ferns that eventually gave this style of establishment their name. It was a space women could go alone or in groups, making Fern Bars significant in the story of the sexual revolution, too.

Because he’s passionate about his work, Doug went deep into the study of 1970s cocktails and emerged with a strong menu that spans the gamut of styles and spirits. It’s sure to delight your palette and give you greater insight into the evolutionary path of the modern cocktail. And get ya drunk.

Allagash Tap Takeover!

Every few months we get a powerful thirst for a particular brewery or style of beer. And that’s when we turn over five of our rotating taps to a higher power. In this particular case, we put ourselves in the very capable hands of Allagash Brewing Company out of Portland, Maine. This New England brewery practically reinvented the wit beer with the release of Allagash White.

We couldn’t be more excited to host five of their finest creations over the next few months. in fact, we’re so excited that we’re throwing a party to celebrate on Tuesday, September 9th! Join us from 5pm-2am as we break the seal on our newest brews:

White, Belgian Style Wheat, ABV: 5.0%
Black, Belgian Style Stout, ABV: 7.5%
Saison, Belgian Style Farmhouse, ABV: 6.1%
Curieux, Bourbon Barrel Aged Strong Ale, ABV: 11%
Neddles, Rum Barrel Aged Sour Brown Ale, ABV: 10.5%

But wait, there’s more! Chef Mickey is going full out with a special, one night only menu of New England favorites: Clam Chowder, Old 1871’s (That’s oysters, guys!), and an honest-to-goodness Lobster Roll!

Grab your very best imbibing partners to chow down and drink up!

Fan Fiction: New Orleans Edition / Tales of the Cocktail Send Off Party!

Our latest edition of Fan Fiction is what we might call a two-fer: we’re going to make you a slew of delicious New Orleans-inspired cocktails and simultaneously have a really cool send off for our bar brethren traveling to The Big Easy for Tales of the Cocktail.

For those familiar with Tales save yourself some syllables with that common abbreviation you can go ahead and skip to the bottom for the pertinent event details. For everyone else, we’re about to let you in on a little secret: NOLA is most fun when the universe's best bartenders converge for five days of cocktail-centric discussion and celebration. And the Spirited Awards, held under the Tales umbrella, is truly the Oscars of bartending, and it’s an honor just to be nominated! And Chicago has a couple horses in this race:

  • Best American Hotel Bar: Sable Kitchen & Bar
  • Best New American Cocktail Bar: Three Dots and a Dash
  • World’s Best Cocktail Menu: The Aviary

And while we wish all of Chicago could make the trip, we know that’s not going to happen. Instead, we’re offering up the chance to raise a glass in good spirits as we celebrate our friends who are making their way South.

If the hullabaloo of Tales of the Cocktail aren’t enough to pique your interest, how about a menu full of cocktails that celebrate the rich and boozy history of New Orleans?

Chicago Craft Beer Week 2014

There’s been a lot happening around here, but that doesn’t mean we’re not stoked to get in on some Chicago Craft Beer Week action! So, we’re tapping a keg of Founder’s Brewing Co’s elusive KBS (Kentucky Breakfast Stout) on Saturday, May 17th!

We’re not saying you have to drink it at breakfast, but you should absolutely drink it while you brunch on Chef Mickey’s awesome menu.  Our beer dude, Kris Nagy, will be pouring some tates of other Founder’s hard to get brews, like Bolt Cutter, Doom and Sweet Repute.

Is it too soon to say we want to see you again next week for brunch? Well we do — and we think honesty is important in this relationship — so how do you like them apples? On Saturday, May 24th, we’ll be featuring all kinds of crazy (and some classic) ciders. There are some radical evolutions happening in the cider world, and we want to share the bounty with you. Featuring super cool cider makers like: Vandermill, Aspall, Anthem and Uncle John’s!

All the CCBW fun starts at noon each Saturday. And let’s be honest, when we open at noon on weekends,  the fun really lasts all night, so we’re not gonna put an end time on our dates.
